My story Tara, Who Could Turn Into a Dragon was published in the spring issue of Mirror Dance, edited by Megan Arkenberg. The story is about a hero named Ashley who’s transported from his world. To get back home, he needs to pass under a magic mountain. He’s guided by a young girl named Tara, who takes him through Hayanmül, the forest of white water and sand.

After graduating from UNC, the economic downturn has Nina Martinez looking for job opportunities off-planet. She goes to Shiraz, the city of the unicorns, where she meets fellow earthling Amanda. Nina and Amanda couldn’t have been more different if they’d met at home, but in Shiraz they are the closest they have to familiar.

My short story Fire Season was published in shiny new magic realist magazine Swamp Biscuits and Tea. After three years of not seeing each other, Carrie Hirsch is reunited with her friend, Balaorin. Their work in lucid dreaming and astral travel takes them to places like Granada, London, Shanghai, and Hanoi. But tensions develop as their interpersonal differences and Carrie’s depression are revealed.
Underneath the Juniper Tree is a Gingerbread Castle
Underneath the Juniper Tree reprinted my short story Hannah, Gregory, and the Gingerbread Castle in their February issue. (The story first appeared in a longer form in now-defunct New Zealand magazine Viola Beadleton’s Compendium.) A modern-day Hansel and Gretel retelling, Hannah and Gregory run into the forest to save their father from mountain lions, bears, and bad directions. They come upon the Gingerbread Castle and other things instead.

A Film Noir Actress and Her Villain in The Red Penny Papers
My short story Leigh and William Hush was published in The Red Penny Papers this June. In her latest film, actress Leigh Wilder played justice-driven Judge Tree. Her lover was supposed to be Robert Leir, the city’s white knight. But instead she fell for William Hush, the villain.
I want to give special thanks to KV Taylor, the magazine’s lovely editor, who was awesome in guiding me through a rewrite of this story before accepting it for publication. This was a story I knew needed extra work, but was secretly hoping that I could squeak by. Luckily, KV (very sweetly) called me on it. She pinpointed exactly what the story was missing, what worked/what didn’t, and basically gave the motivational push I needed to sit down and fix it up. And I’m really happy I did. All thanks to KV.
Mermaids that Fell out of the Sky into New Horizons
My short story THE CITY OF LONELY LIGHTS was published in The British Fantasy Society’s BFS Journal this April. It’s about Selby, a young chemist, who arrives in the city of Mermaid’s Jewel for a three-month business trip. She meets a strange young man named Calvin, who introduces her to the mermaids and has his own otherworldly secret.
7-Year-Old Twins, a Gingerbread Castle, and New Zealand
My short story HANNAH, GREGORY, AND THE GINGERBREAD CASTLE was published in New Zealand magazine Viola Beadleton’s Compendium this May. A modern-day, tongue-in-cheek retelling of Hansel and Gretel, 7-year-old twins Hannah and Gregory wander into an unfamiliar forest and come upon the Gingerbread Castle, a chocolate cake cottage, and a woman who may just be a witch. It’s my first short story publication and hopefully the first of many more to come. 🙂
